JOANN’s is closing

Yeah, I know. It’s a hot topic in the sewing world right now.

Firstly, my heart goes out to all the employees of JOANN’s who are now facing the loss of their jobs, and I am truly hoping that they’re able to find their way with resilience and no hardship.

Secondly, I know the crafting community either just lost their only in store option within a short distance of their homes, or they lost nothing which is why JOANN’s might have gone bankrupt in the first place. Like it or not, it’s a hot topic right now.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to share the small amount of knowledge I have of places I like to shop online or locally for my supplies. I haven’t stepped foot into JOANN’s in about 6 months or longer, and when I do it’s because I procrastinated ordering thread and needed something last minute. You might have to order ahead now, or take this chance to learn about your local shops who are dying to earn your business.

I see bright things on the horizon for the small shops of the community, and I’m here to cheer them on.

I’m in Kansas City, MO, so some of these are going to be local to me.

My favorite places to get fabric

1. Local Creative Reuse Center

The best thing to do first is to try to find your materials in a creative reuse center. Think thrift store for craft supplies only. Unfortunately, the human’s carbon footprint is pretty big. This is one way to save mother earth AND your wallet. I linked another sewist blog that was so kind to create a running list of creative reuse centers around the USA. ‘Nuff said. Click the link.

Why Buy: Perfect for sustainability and smaller budgets.

2. Carriage House Printery

This company sells the best fabric bases in my opinion. Due to cost, I would not want to use my purchases from here on a test project, however they print fantastic fabrics for beautiful final projects. Their quality is amazing and I’ve never had issues with the fabric tearing. I love how many natural fiber choices they have.

Why Buy: Ideal for custom fabric printing with a ton of base options to choose from. Load the cart, ship all at once, save on shipping. 😉

3. Fabric Fabulousss

Fabric Fabulousss has a lot of options but they change inventory often. You may not find the same thing again later. They carry a lot of great solids in a few bases. The price point is unmatched. They ship pretty fast, too. No custom printing. It’s all ready to sell. They also sell most of their fabrics in 1 yard cuts, this saves them time. If you want a continuous yard, you’ll have to see if it’s available in their continuous yards section.

Why Buy: If you’re looking for test fabric or something on a budget, this is your place to go.

Of course there are so many fabric places to choose from, and I could get deep into the list further. However, I’m short on time, and I do this for free. LOL. I might come back with my favorite places for notions, machines, parts, etc.

XOXO
