I was so excited the first time I ever made something myself on my sewing machine. I was 3 months postpartum and I was loving the adorable outfits I found from boutiques. However, I was a SAHM at the time, and really couldn’t afford the price tag, since most of them came from shops who were homemaking their clothes for sale. Yet, affordable options like TEMU & SHEIN really weren’t an option due to my moral dilemma with those companies.
So then I thought, how hard could it be to sew something myself? (Ha.) I asked my friends and local buy nothing group, and got myself some materials and a machine to start me off. Alas – I made my first pair of “bummies”.
I never got a modeled photo because, well – turns out that this fabric didn’t have any stretch which is pretty important in garments that don’t have zippers or buttons. So sadly, it went to the trash. It was a good learning moment, though. The excitement of making something myself felt so good, though!
It became my new obsession – I started joining all sorts of Facebook groups for sewists. I watched YouTube videos. I practiced a lot until I became pretty good at it. I even had people asking to buy things I made. That was the biggest compliment.
So, if you’re here and you’ve never sewn, but you want to – just know it’ll come to you and everyone’s journey starts somewhere.
Thanks for being here.
